Election to the NAE is one of the highest honors in the engineering profession, reserved for individuals whose research, practice, and educational advancements have made a lasting impact.
This achievement follows Dr. Wiethorn’s 2022 induction into the National Academy of Construction (NAC), making him one of the few individuals honored by both esteemed organizations. This dual recognition reflects his lifelong dedication to improving safety and innovation in construction and engineering.
With over 50 years of experience in building design, construction, and safety evaluation, Jim Wiethorn is widely recognized for his expertise in crane accidents and operations. Having investigated more than 1,100 crane and rigging failures worldwide, he is an active contributor to industry safety standards, serving on committees such as the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
In 2018, Dr. Wiethorn patented a securement system for crawler cranes, with additional patents currently pending. He is licensed as a professional engineer in 35 states and is a founder of International Crane & Construction Safety Solutions, LLC. His insights have been pivotal in numerous legal cases, where he has served as an expert witness.
Dr. Wiethorn is also the author of “Crane Accidents: A Study of Causes & Trends to Create a Safer Work Environment, 1983-2013”—the most comprehensive study of its kind. This landmark research analyzed 501 crane accidents over a 30-year span, offering critical insights that continue to shape industry safety practices.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Wiethorn on this well-deserved milestone!
